Welcome to Westfield State College's Department of Music. From within these pages you will be able to get a glimpse of the music department, the courses we offer, meet the faculty, and departmental events that we welcome you to attend. We offer a selection of concentrations within the music degree.

Among the many exciting highlights of majoring in Music at Westfield State College is to study with distinguished Artist-Teachers who are widely recognized in their respective fields as outstanding and productive scholars and performers. More than 31 distinguished faculty members share their experience and knowledge with students from throughout New England and beyond, helping them to prepare for careers in music, education and other related fields. The Department of Music takes pride in its warm, comfortable atmosphere and small class sizes with more personal attention given to each student. Our priority is dynamic, effective teaching, and student involvement in the life of the college and the community.

Through the successful completion of an audition and interview, our music students have the opportunity to pursue the degree of Bachelor of Arts with the choice of at least one of the following concentrations: Music Education, Performance, Jazz Studies, Composition, Music History and Literature.

The Department of Music offers a wide array of performance opportunities for the students at Westfield State College. Ensembles such at the College Chorale, the College Chorus (Festival Chorus), the String Ensemble the Jazz Big Band, and the Wind Symphony have earned a reputation for a high and uniform standard of musically communicative performances both on and off campus. All of our performing ensembles draw their members not only from the many talented students majoring in music, but also from the finest performers majoring in other disciplines at the College. In addition to the above ensembles, qualified students are also invited to participate in several smaller chamber ensembles.

Faculty and students maintain a professional standard of musicianship, and students find that after graduation they are well trained to achieve career or further educational goals. Our graduates have secured positions as music educators, professional performers, music industry personnel, and as church music directors to name a few. Others go on to pursue advanced degrees from such institutions as the University of Michigan, the New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Miami, California Institute of Arts, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and the University of North Texas, among others.

Our facilities include a state-of-the-art music technology lab equipped with 17 digital pianos, individual practice rooms, a recital hall, and a concert hall. In addition, both the department and college libraries hold an impressive collection of scores, recordings and videos.
