Spanish (Español) is the Romance language spoken in Spain and in some twenty countries in Central and South America. It is a language of rich and varied cultural traditions. Famous authors of the Spanish language include Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón, Galdós, Unamuno, Azorín, Lorca, Hernández, Mistral, Darío, Borges, Paz, Asturias, Cortázar, Márquez, Llosa, and Neruda.

We offer a minor in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. Students will have the opportunity to gain a practical working knowledge of the Spanish language. Proficiency in Spanish can open doors for you in business and commerce, government, social service, education, as well as in many other professional careers. Our undergraduates seek to gain proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish while they learn of the rich cultural diversity of the Spanish speaking world.

We also offer courses dealing with Hispanic culture and literature that are taught in English.

Westfield State College offers Spanish 1 every fall semester and Spanish 2 every spring semester. In addition, upper level courses in language aquisition are available - see below for a listing of this Spanish language courses. Courses marked with an asterisk may be taken for core credit.

Five hundred years ago, Spanish became the language of administration of the Spanish Empire. Once the peoples of Spanish America declared their independence, Spanish became the official language of the new republics. It is now one of the official languages of the U. N. and is spoken in the following 20 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Spanish is also the mother tongue of large numbers of people in the United States: in the southwest, southern Florida, and the urban centers of the north.
