Math Awareness Month

Math Awareness Month, April 2008 has the theme Math and Voting: What Makes your Vote Matter? "In a presidential election year, voting is uppermost on our minds. Candidates vie for attention, polls are taken, debates held, blogs written, primaries conducted, and, ultimately, a general election leads to the naming of the next president of the United States. Some of us are deeply engaged in these processes, and some keep them at a distance. Yet, most people wonder at some point: Does my vote matter? Is the election process fair? Are the votes being counted correctly? The answers to these questions involve great complexity, but fortunately, mathematics and statistics provide the means to deal with such complexity."

Information on Careers in Mathematics

For graduates of the Mathematics program there are career opportunities in actuarial science; mathematical applications in science, industry and finance; statistics; and secondary teaching. A major in Mathematics is also sound preparation for professional school in law or medicine and for graduate study in areas such as the physical and biological sciences, economics, computer science or mathematics. There are also several online sources for information on careers in mathematics.
  • The AMS Mathematical Sciences Career Information page provides
    • profiles of mathematicians
    • a list of applications provided by working mathematicians and is a quick reference to some of the fields of mathematics used in industry and government applications
    • a mentoring program that the AMS and SIAM have developed to help students who are interested in nonacademic work
    • career planning information
    • a summary of data from a 1993 NSF survey on recent bachelor's and master's degree recipients working in nonacademic positions.
  • The MAA Career Information Page has:
    • profiles of jobs held by people who have majored in mathematics and who have a wide variety of backgrounds after graduation
    • links to articles on the wide variety of jobs held by mathematics majors
    • tips on begining a job search
    • information on some graduate programs
  • SIAM has a Career information page with a report on mathematics in industry and information on professional opportunities.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a page on Mathematicians that gives information on careers in mathematics.
  • The following international directory from The University of Nottingham consists of individuals currently working in mathematics education.
