Lambda Iota Tau, an international Honor Society for students of Literature, is an organization dedicated to the recognition and promotion of excellence in the study of literature. The Greek letters, LIT, are an acronym for the society, whose name is derived from its motto: "The word gives form to the idea."
A highly selective honor society, Lambda Iota Tau requires that its members be English majors or minors, provide evidence of superior scholarship in the study of literature by being in the upper 20% of their class in cumulative average, and complete twelve credit hours of literature with an average grade of "B"(exclusive of core courses). Students invited to become members of LIT are required to submit an initiation paper of a quality certified by the faculty adviser on a literary topic (research or critical) or of a creative nature (short story, essay, poem, or play). The initiation paper may be a paper completed and previously submitted in a course at Westfield State College. If you would like to know more about this society go here
Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. A
member of the Association of College Honor Societies, it was founded in 1924. The purposes of the society are (a) to confer
distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies;
(b) to promote interest in literature and the English language on local campuses and their surrounding communities; and
(c) to foster the discipline of English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing.
Active membership is available, in general, to students with a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English, who rank
at least in the highest thirty-five percent of their class in general scholarship, and who have completed at least three
semesters or five quarters of college work. If you would like to know more about this society go
