Literature
(39 Credits)

Area 1: one (3 credit) 200- or 300- level writing course
Area 2: one (3 credit) course in a major figure, period or genre
Area 3: four (3 credit) 300-level literature, writing or film course

*Either ENGL-0211 British Literature 1603-1780 or ENGL-0212 British Literature From 1780 to the Present, whichever is not taken as a requirement, is one of the only two 200-level literature courses that counts as a 300-level elective towards the major. ENGL-0250 Oral Interpretation and ENGL-0297 Honors Literature (varying topics) also count as a 300-level course.

Foreign Language Requirement: To graduate as an English major, a student must, in addition to other requirements, complete at least two college semesters of one foreign language, unless in high school he or she has (a) completed three years of study of one foreign language, or (b) completed two years of study in each of two foreign languages. A student may also satisfy the foreign language requirement by passing a nationally designed proficiency examination administered locally.

ALL STUDENTS WHO WISH CERTIFICATION IN EITHER OR BOTH THE MIDDLE AND SECONDARY LEVEL SHOULD SEE ADVISERS IN BOTH THE ENGLISH AND EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS.

Note: To be approved for the for the Methods course and the teaching practicum, students must maintain a 2.7 in English courses counting toward the Literature concentration and be recommended by the Program Director or Chair.

Foreign Language Requirement: To graduate as an English major, a student must, in addition to other requirements, complete at least two college semesters of one foreign language, unless in high school he or she has (a) completed three years of study of one foreign language, or (b) completed two years of study in each of two foreign languages. A student may also satisfy the foreign language requirement by passing a nationally designed proficiency examination administered locally.

Theatre Generalist Track(15 credits) - Students must consult with a Theatre Arts Program advisor in choosing their courses in order to insure sufficient breadth and balance within the concentration. Courses may be selected from the Performance and Design/Technology tracks, as well as any of the courses in the Theatre Core Requirements list that are not being used to fulfill requirements of that area. This track is recommended for students interested in pursuing one of the State Department of Education alternative routes to licensure in Theatre.
