The English Department has an Open House for majors and faculty in October and an Alum-Major-Faculty Gathering in May, when students who graduated with majors in English return to discuss career experiences and opportunities for the English major. English majors interested in organizing events (such as readings, slams, plays, publications, and field trips) will always find faculty willing to offer support. The EnglishClub is a student-run organization which creates exciting social and cultural events for faculty and students, such as writing marathons for creative writing, poetry readings, and trips off campus. Students of all majors may join the club and hold offices. The English Club also produces the literary magazine, Persona. The department sponsors Persona, an annual publication that includes fiction, poetry, drama, essays and artwork by students throughout the college. Selections are made by a student editorial staff. View winning selections from years past: 2008, 2007, and 2006. Student fiction writers can compete for glory in this two-hour contest by writing a short story using a first line given to them at the start of the contest. Every year several readings are organized for campus poets, including the New Works! Reading to celebrate the spring equinox. (Held in the Fall semester)
