Course Loads

With a 12-hour teaching load that normally includes two courses in literature and two in composition, faculty members generally teach one or two upper-level courses in their specialty each semester. The other literature courses may be either period surveys required for English majors or introductory literature courses for nonmajors.

English faculty also have an opportunity, however, to teach in the college's Honors Program, to teach interdisciplinary courses and to teach in the department's graduate program, which offers a Master of Arts degree in English. Click here for more information on the graduate program.

Although teaching is our primary responsibility, English faculty members at Westfield State also remain active in scholarship, in student activities, and in campus service. A special characteristic of WSC underlying all the college's programs is the belief that learning and scholarship are strengthened through outreach and community involvement. The English faculty, therefore, maintains strong ties with segments of the local community such as the school systems, literacy groups, theatre groups, and arts programs.

    The Westfield Area

Western Massachusetts abounds with cultural and recreational activities, making it an especially nice place for academic and family life. Westfield is located within half an hour of Northampton and an hour of Amherst with their celebrated bookstores, shops, cafes, and libraries. Tanglewood and summer stock theatre in the Berkshires are less than an hour away. Both Boston and New York City are easy day trips. Set on the edge of the Berkshires, Westfield is a city with a strong sense of history and tradition since its founding in 1669. Besides its indoor as well as outdoor recreational activities, the city boasts fine schools and reasonable housing costs.
