PSYCHOLOGY STATEMENT
The psychology major offers a unique blend of the Liberal Arts and professional studies. An attractive feature of the major is its versatility. Students received a solid foundation in psychological principles along with an experiential understanding of these tenets in a variety of settings. Graduates are prepared for and enter fields in which psychology plays a predominant role, such as Human Services, as well as areas in which psychology has a major influence, such as teaching, business and criminal justice. Direct entry into graduate programs is another popular option selected by our graduates.
The doctoral level faculty represents the breadth of the Psychology Department, as does our extensive curriculum. With but two courses required of all majors, each student, with the assistance of a department advisor, can develop a plan of studies which addresses individual interests, talents and goals. Students may choose from an array of course which are regularly offered, including a practicum served in a variety of agency, school, and business settings, special topic courses, and independent study opportunities. The Department offers laboratories and equipment to carry out experimental work. Opportunities exist for students to collaborate with faculty in doing research and in presenting papers. The utility of a background in Psychology results in many students selecting it as a second major in conjunction with programs like Education, or as a minor to complement programs like Business, Criminal Justice or Communication.
