ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM (ATEP)

Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are medical professionals who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illness that occur to athletes and the physically active. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic healthcare team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports, industrial and commercial settings and other healthcare environments (NATA).

The Athletic Training Education Program at Westfield State College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Movement Science with a concentration in Athletic Training. The Program offers academic course work in combination with clinical experiences in a progression that culminates in graduation with eligibility to be a candidate for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Graduates of the Program who subsequently pass the BOC examination are qualified to seek employment as an athletic trainer in public or private secondary schools, two year or four year colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional athletic teams, industrial and commercial settings, and a variety of other healthcare settings.

WSC's Program is comprehensive and academically challenging. The ATEP has competitive enrollment and specific requirements for admission and retention. The Program is a minimum six semesters in length with students typically entering in their second semester.
