World Languages and Literatures

Notitia linguarum est prima porta sapientiae. -Roger Bacon, Opus Tertiam

(Knowledge of languages is the gateway to wisdom.)

Our program provides you the opportunity to gain a practical working knowledge of the foreign language or languages you will need in your future. All language courses focus on proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing, as well as on expanding your knowledge of the target cultures.

We offer a minor in both French and Spanish. Courses in Portuguese and other languages may be available as well when student demand and staffing permit. We may offer German, Italian and Russian. The minor consists of 18 credit hours, including the 0103 and 0104 Intermediate level courses in each language. A working knowledge of another language provides opportunities in business and commerce, in government and social services, and in most professional careers.

We also participate actively in the college's core curriculum by offering core courses in the culture and literature of peoples from around the world. Our focus is cross-cultural and interdisciplinary. Such courses provide students with valuable insights into the creative spirit of other peoples, their perspectives on past and contemporary issues, and an appreciation of their cultures. A number of courses examine the works of women writers as well. These courses count towards the minor.

Westfield State College offers interested students the opportunity to study abroad, and we urge students studying a language to take advantage of these programs. Planning for the Junior Year abroad should begin in the Freshman year or no later than the first semester of the Sophomore year.

Die Grenzen meiner Sprache bedeuten die Grenzen meiner Welt.

-Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-philosophicus

(The limits of my language mark the limits of my world.)
