Following this schedule, students will just be able to complete all history and education requirements within four years. This schedule allows no room for any other electives or another minor. However, since student teaching is only 12 credits, you may still need to pick up an extra 1-2 credits.
TIPS for History Education Majors:
GARP 102 (Physical Geography w/ Lab) can fill both the geography elective and the CORE lab science requirement. However, it is not the most suitable geography course for future social studies teachers. Instead, history education majors are encouraged to take either GARP 101: World Regional Geography or GARP 210: Cultural Geography.
ED 321: The Middle School and Its Students. Only required for students seeking certification at this level. In one of your observations you must observe at least 15 hrs. in a middle school.
ED 353/54: Ed Planning & Evaluation should be taken Junior or Senior year before taking Hist 298-99: Methods for Teaching History. Both courses are offered each semester.
Hist 273: Economic and Labor History may fulfill the economics requirement but then can not also count for history major credit.
Two other courses can count as history electives: LLIT 220: Studies in European Culture: The Holocaust also fulfills the CORE's Literary & Philosophical Analysis Category. ENGL 296: Major Issues in the Vietnam War also counts as a history elective.
Other courses that are highly recommended for history education majors include: EDUC 318: Reading in the Content Areas (includes Social Studies textbook reading); MCOM 0101: Intro to Mass Communications (CORE course), and MCOM 0319: Media Literacy (highlights using media in the classroom).
MINORS: Consider doing a minor; it will enhance your "job potential." Political Science, Multicultural and Ethnic Studies, or Women's Studies minors could complement your history major.
