WESTFIELD SWEEPS WORCESTER STATE
WORCESTER – The Westfield State softball team
rapped 24 hits in a 6-4, 14-6 doubleheader sweep of Worcester State on April 16.
The Owls
survived a last-inning Worcester rally to take
the opener. Westfield scored three
runs in the top of the seventh for a 6-1 lead. The Lancers rallied for three
runs in their final at bat and had the bases loaded when Worcester leadoff hitter
Jessica Lisi popped out to pitcher Leah Peterson on an 0-2 pitch to end the game.
Westfield was outhit, 9-6, in the first game but took advantage of five Worcester errors. Second
baseman Amanda Fregeau was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two
RBI. Fregeau also had a sacrifice hit, a sacrifice
fly, and a stolen base.
Peterson earned
the victory despite walking six; she recorded eight strikeouts.
In the
nightcap, Westfield scored in
every inning, including five runs in the first, to rout Worcester in six
innings.
Peterson was 4
for 5 with a double, four runs scored and two RBI from the leadoff position. Fregeau was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Kate Silva was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored and Liz Oliveira was
3 for 4 with a double. Casey Greggo was 2 for 4 with
a double and two RBI.
Beth Garfield,
who was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, picked up the pitching victory, relieving
Peterson in second inning.
