Westfield State 78 Š Worcester State 67

 

 

WESTFIELD Š Senior forward Vaso Jaukovic (Montenegro) scored a game-high 22 points and junior forward Mike Jurkowski (Belchertown) had 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead Westfield State to a 78-67 conference victory over Worcester State on Jan. 15.

 

All five starters for Westfield (5-6, 1-1) scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Gavin Illangakoon (Ellington, Conn.) had 14 points, including 10 in the first half, and four assists; freshman point guard Steve Martins (Westfield/Voke High School) contributed 12 points, three assists and three steals; and sophomore guard Ricky Ogboin (Boston) added 12 points and a team-high four steals.

 

The teams were tied at halftime, 38-38. Worcester State committed 16 first-half turnovers, but the Lancers shot 56 percent from the field, including 5-for-5 from 3-point range.

 

The Owls led for most of the second half, and took a 69-59 lead with 4:04 remaining on a 3-point basket by Martins. Westfield made enough free throws down the stretch and received several big offensive rebounds by Jurkowski to notch the home conference victory.

 

Junior guard Tyson Drayton (Roxbury) led Worcester State with 16 points. Senior center Jermaine Cannon (Dorchester) posted a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
