WNEC 67 Š Westfield State 47

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Ń Western New England College completed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 67-47 victory over visiting Westfield State College.

 

Sophomore forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) led the Golden Bears with 15 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.

 

Senior forward Anthony Charbatji (Attleboro, MA) added 11 points and sophomore center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) tied his career high with 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds as Western New England College (10-6) won its third straight game.

 

Senior forward Jason Cardinal (Ashaway, RI) contributed a season high nine points off the bench.

 

Westfield State (6-8) started the game with a 13-0 run before WNEC came back to take a 31-27 lead at halftime. The Golden Bears stretched their lead to 44-32 with 11:20 left in the contest and the Owls never got closer than eight.

 

Junior forward Mike Jurkowski (Belchertown, MA) led the Owls with 14 points while graduate student forward Vaso Jaukovic (Montenegro) added 11 points and sophomore guard Ricky Ogboin (Boston, MA) contributed 10 points.

 

The Owls only shot 33 percent from the field, including 0-for-13 from 3-point range.

 

This was Western New England College's best defensive scoring performance this season. The Golden Bears defeated Hartwick 62-49 on November 20.
