The Westfield State women’s volleyball team had a subpar 2004 season in posting a 9-17 overall record. The Owls did qualify for the Mass. State Conference postseason tournament for the eighth straight season.
Westfield State had three all-conference performers on its fairly young squad. Senior captain Amy Svatik – the team’s only four-year player – was a first team all-conference selection along with junior outside hitter Lindsay Dalene.
Svatik was the No. 1 libero player in the conference and led the Owls with 542 digs, an average of 6.4 per game. She also compiled 21 kills and 20 aces.
Dalene posted team-highs of 248 kills and 36 aces and was second with 71 blocks. Freshman setter Krista Grifoni was a second team all-conference choice and also was named the conference Rookie of the Year. She led the Owls with 407 assists, an average of 4.6 per game.
Other key performers for the Owls were juniors Rachel Sweeney and Danielle Mainini, sophomores Stefanie West and Kayla Banaszek, and freshmen Morgan Hosking, Kate Spriegel and Kristen Gorski.
Spriegel had a team-high 89 blocks and West ranked second with 111 kills and 133 digs. Gorski was second on the team with 172 assists and 23 aces. Hosking had 89 kills, 14 aces, and 38 blocks.
“I was pleased with our team’s effort this season,” said head coach Fred Glanville. “We had good team leadership and we had many young players who had to play a lot this year."
Fred Glanville completed his second year of coaching on the collegiate level in 2004. His first year at Westfield State he led the Owls to a 15-9 overall record and a conference second place finish.
Glanville is a native of Ludlow, Mass., and has served as the head coach of both the boys' and girls' team at Ludlow High School. He was the girls' coach for five years, compiling an 82-29 record. His girls' team reached the Western Mass. finals four years and captured championships in 1998 and 2000.
Glanville has been the head coach of the Ludlow boys' team since its inception in 1997. The team posted an aggregate record of 119-59 during the first nine seasons and won the Western Mass. title in 2001.
Glanville continues coaching the Ludlow boys' team but he has relinquished his head coaching duties with the Ludlow girls. "His teams do very well," said Pat Demers, a local high school coach and volleyball official. "He seems to get the most out of his players. He has a laid back style, he knows what he is doing, and he knows discipline....."
Fred's style is professional and I have only good things to say about him," said Springfield College coach Joel Dearing. "His teams are positive and enthusiastic, and he is established and resourceful."
