In another dominating performance, the Westfield State men’s track and field team won its ninth straight Massachusetts State Athletics Conference (MASCAC) championship and its 22nd in the past 23 years on Sunday, May 1, at UMass Dartmouth’s new facility.
The Owls also extended their impressive streak in the New England Alliance championships, which were held in conjunction with the MASAC meet. The 10-team Alliance meet, which includes colleges from the MASAC and Little East Conference, began nine years ago and Westfield State has won all nine championships.
Westfield only placed first in three of the 20 events in the Alliance meet, but its depth and confidence again paid off. Claiming the only individual titles were a pair of Athol natives: senior standout Peter King in the shot put and discus and junior Shawn McCorquodale with a personal best of 22-10 in the long jump.
The Owls accumulated 157.5 points in the Alliance meet, followed by Eastern Connecticut (131), UMass Dartmouth (97) and Southern Maine (93.5).
In the MASCAC meet, the Owls racked up 261 points, followed by Fitchburg State (125) and Worcester State (101).
The last time the Owls lost the MASAC meet was in 1996 when it was edged by Bridgewater State. In that meet, standout Ryan Schmitt suffered a leg injury early in the meet that probably cost the Owls the championship. Nevertheless, their run of championships is an eye opener.
I was pleased again with our performances,” said veteran coach Sean O’Brien. “The kids know the tradition we have here and they work hard to perform well in the championship meets.”
This was the year the Owls won by dominating the field events. They totaled more than half of their MASCAC points (150) in seven field events. The most dominating effort was in the shot put where they took the top five places.
King took the shot and discus crowns, placed second in the hammer throw and fifth in the javelin.
Westfield State placed first in nine of the 20 MASAC events. The big surprise for the Owls was the performance of first-year performer Jacques Moret, who graduated from Westfield Vocational High School, which does not field a track team.
Moret claimed MASCAC crowns in the 200 (23.44) and 400 (50.93) meter dashes and was a member of the winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay squads. He also finished fourth in the 100 meter dash.
Two Westfield High School graduates – John Messer and Drew Soltysiak – also performed well. Messer won the 800 meter run in 2:02.52 and Soltysiak placed second in the javelin (163-8) behind teammate Dave Bergeron (180-8).
Bergeron was one of four Owls who performed well on the regional and national levels. Bergeron earned All-America honors by placing sixth in the NCAA outdoor championships. He also was runner-up in the New England Division 3 finals.
Junior David Richardson was an All-American in the high jump, placing fifth in the national indoor championships. He also won the New England Division 3 indoor title. Despite an injury-plagued outdoor season, Richardson qualified for the NCAA championships, where he placed 12th.
Junior Shawn McCorquodale just missed qualifying for the outdoor nationals, but he did win the New England (all divisions) long jump crown.
Senior Peter King finished a fine collegiate career as the school record holder in the discus, outdoor shot put and indoor shot put. He was an All New England performer in both the shot put and discus and selected the MASCAC senior male scholar-athlete of the year.
Eighth-year head coach Sean O'Brien led Westfield State to the Mass. State Conference championship and the New England Alliance outdoor championship for the past eight years. In addition, the Owls clinched the Alliance indoor crown in 2000 and 2003.
O'Brien is also an assistant football coach at Westfield State, directing the defensive secondary. The Orange, Mass., native's coaching stops include: Fitchburg State, Oberlin College in Ohio, Nichols College, Athol High School and Frontier Regional High School.

The Westfield State women’s track and field team upped its streak to eight straight by winning the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASAC) championship on Sunday, May 1, at UMass Dartmouth.
Led by another brilliant effort by senior standout Tessa Donoghue, the Owls compiled 200 points to finish ahead of a vastly improved Worcester State squad (166 points).
The 10-team New England Alliance championship was held in conjunction with the MASCAC meet, and Westfield placed second in the Alliance for its highest finish in five years. Southern Maine ran away with the Alliance crown (259.5 points) followed by Westfield (114) and Keene State (87).
“I was pleasantly surprised with placing second in the Alliance meet,” said coach Sean O’Brien. “I thought the MASCAC meet would be a little closer but we had some good performances.”
Donoghue one upped herself this year in the MASAC meet by placing first in six individual events and anchoring the winning 4 x 100 relay squad. Last season she won five individual crowns.
The Springfield Cathedral graduate won the 100, long jump, triple jump and high jump in both the MASCAC and Alliance meets. The 4 x 100 relay of Katelyn Kervin, Kristin Pellegrinelli, CC Costello and Donoghue also placed first in both meets. Donoghue also won the MASCAC crowns in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles.
Donoghue took one jump in the triple jump and shattered the meet record with an effort of 38-10.25. Two days earlier, she set a school record in the triple jump with a sensational leap of 40-2 at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Donoghue’s brilliant performances during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons did not go unnoticed as she received the prestigious Honda Award as the 2005 NCAA Division III women’s track and field athlete of the year. The Wheaton College transfer earned four of her 14 All-America plaques during her senior season. She was second nationally in the triple jump outdoors and long jump indoors, third in the triple jump indoors, and fourth in the long jump outdoors. She was the New England champion in the outdoor and indoor long jumps, and the ECAC outdoor champion in the long jump and triple jump.
In the MASCAC meet, the Owls took first in 12 events. Caitlin Bates and Heather Wenninger defended their conference crowns in the 10,000 and 5,000 meter runs, respectively. Also finishing first were Alison Wesolowski (steeplechase), senior Erin Coburn (hammer throw) and Nicole Varteresian (discus). Wenninger and Wesolowski also won individual titles in the Alliance meet.
Westfield only had one second place in the MASCAC meet (Marissa Blume in the 1500) but it picked up some key points in the third thru six slots.
Blume was third in the 800 meter run. Versatile junior captain CC Costello placed in seven of the nine events in which she competed. She was a member of the winning relay, third in the javelin and 400 hurdles, fourth in the hurdles and long jump, and fifth in the triple jump and hammer throw.
Katelyn Kervin ran on the winning relay, placed third in the long jump and finished fifth in the 100, 400 and high jump.
Seventh-year head coach Sean O'Brien led Westfield State to Mass. State Conference championships the past six years and the 2000 New England Alliance indoor title.
With a strong incoming recruiting class, the hard-working coach expects Westfield to defend its conference title and begin to consistently excel on the regional and national levels.
O'Brien is also an assistant football coach at Westfield State, directing the defensive secondary for the past two years. The Orange, Mass., native's coaching stops include: Fitchburg State, Oberlin College in Ohio, Nichols College, Athol High School and Frontier Regional High School.
