Men's Soccer Season Review

2004

The Westfield State men’s soccer team experienced its second straight roller coaster season in 2004.

Following season-opening losses to Springfield and Babson, the Owls recorded five straight shutouts, including a scoreless tie with nationally ranked Keene State.

Westfield ran its unbeaten streak to six straight with a convincing 3-1 victory over Salem. The Owls then suffered a midseason slump, going 0-3-1 in their next four games, including key conference losses to Framingham Stae and Mass Maritime.

The Owls regrouped for consecutive victories over Fitchburg, MCLA and WPI to set up a key match-up with conference champion Worcester State in the regular season finale. Despite outplaying Worcester State, the Owls lost to the Lancers, 2-1, in overtime to finish their season.

Westfield had three players garner first team all-conference honors: senior midfielder Jeff Whittaker, junior back Ray Cheria and sophomore forward Dave Nalewanski. Senior back Jay Jeffrey was a second team selection.

Nalewanski led the team in scoring with 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists), and Cheria was the second leading scorer with nine points (4 goals, 1 assist).

Cheria, Jeffrey and Whittaker anchored the Owl defense that allowed only 16 goals in 16 games and recorded eight shutouts.

Junior goalie Matt Costa – a transfer from Holyoke Community College (HCC) – shared team MVP honors with Jeffrey.

Named the team’s outstanding contributors were first-year players Brennan Struthers – a freshman midfielder – and Matt Prest – a junior transfer from HCC. Freshman Drew Nalewanski – the team’s third leading scorer – was another promising first-year player.
