Westfield State 70 Ð Newbury College 57

WESTFIELD Ð Junior forward Amanda Chapin (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Academy) scored a team-high 17 points and tied a school record with 22 rebounds to lead Westfield State to a 70-57 victory over Newbury College in a non-conference womenÕs basketball game on Dec. 11.

The 5-9 Chapin registered her fourth straight double double for the 3-4 Owls, and she did set a school record with 17 defensive rebounds in the first women's game in Westfield's new field house - the Woodward Center. Chapin shares the single-game school record for rebounds with Ellen Carey (vs. AIC in 1990) and Carol Ringer (vs. Western Connecticut in 1985).

The Owls made their first four 3-point attempts Ð by four different players Ð in jumping out to an 18-11 lead with 13:11 remaining in the first half. Westfield led at halftime, 41-28, and its biggest lead was 53-37 with 13:41 remaining.

Newbury (3-6) - coached by former Westfield State standout Andrea Bertini - cut the lead to nine points late in the game.

Three other players scored in double figures in WestfieldÕs balanced attack. Freshman point guard Kyana Zavala (Springfield/Cathedral) had 12 points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Melissa Macchi (Peabody) finished with 11 points and six assists. Junior guard Meghan McCarthy (Belchertown) totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Reserve forward Rebekah Lent, also from Belchertown, contributed six points and 11 rebounds.

Junior guard Quandra Harrison (Brockton) led Newbury with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Randi Hardiman (Loudon, NH) had 16 points and eight rebounds and senior forward Ebony White (Lynn/Lynn Tech) had eight points and 13 boards.

WestfieldÕs next game is Saturday, Jan. 1, when it faces Manhattanville in the Keene State Touranment.
