Fitchburg State 3 Ð Westfield State 2, Overtime

         FITCHBURG Ð Dan McPherson scored in the first minute of the second overtime to lift Fitchburg State to a 3-2 victory over Westfield State on Friday evening, Oct. 21.

         The Owls dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference following the heartbreaking defeat. Fitchburg is 3-8-1 and 2-4.

         McPherson had a wide open shot at the net to score his seventh goal of the season as Westfield State goalie Mike Thompson slipped and fell to the ground while defending on the play.

         The halftime score was 1-1 as Westfield tied the score in the 27th minute on a goal by Trevor Groves. Dave Nalewanski assisted on the play.

         Fitchburg took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute on a penalty kick. Westfield made it 2-all in the 77th minute on a Matt Ross goal, with Groves credited with an assist.

         The Owls had a one-man advantage for nearly half the game as Korey Keegan Ð who scored FitchburgÕs first goal - was red carded following his second yellow card in the 55th minute. Westfield outshot Fitchburg, 16-11.

         Falcon goalie Nate Thornhill had 11 saves, including a stop of a Dave Nalewanski penalty kick 8:10 into the game. Thompson was credited with five.
