BUZZARDS BAY Ð The Westfield State softball squad split a doubleheader with Mass Maritime Academy on Sunday, April 10.
The Owls (5-13, 1-3) won the opener, 8-0, in six innings, while the Bucs (2-7, 1-3) won the nightcap, 3-2.
In the first game, the Owls blew open a 2-0 lead with a five-run uprising in the third inning. The Owls took advantage of four Mass Maritime errors in the inning.
Winning pitcher Leah Peterson helped her cause at the plate, going 3 for 3 with an RBI. Senior catcher Liz Oliveira was 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Amanda Fregeau was 1 for 4 with two RBI.
Peterson tossed a one-hitter, allowing no walks and striking out five. Mass. MaritimeÕs Michelle Smith broke up a perfect game with a one-out line drive single in the fifth.
In the second game, Mass Maritime snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the fifth inning. Westfield scored a run in its final at bat.
The Bucs outhit the Owls, 9-4. Peterson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Oliveira pounded a double.
Beth Garfield suffered the mound setback; she was relieved in the fifth by Peterson.
