BUZZARDS BAY Ð The Westfield State baseball squad split a doubleheader with Mass Maritime Academy on Sunday, April 10.

 

The Bucs (2-5, 1-3) won the opener, 5-4, in nine innings, while the Owls (9-11, 2-2) coasted in the nightcap, 12-2.

 

In the first game, the Owls rallied for a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Key hits in the seventh were an RBI single by Jay Brown and RBI doubles by Justin Parr and Troy Ferguson.

 

The Bucs battled back to score twice and send the game into extra innings. Mass Maritime scored the game winner on an unearned run in the ninth.

 

The Owls were outhit, 12-5. Ferguson was 2 for 3.

 

Starting pitcher Derek Anghilante went seven innings, allowing 10 hits and striking out six. Trent Rivers took the loss in relief.

 

The Owls banged 13 hits in nightcap, and scored four in the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 deadlock. Ferguson was 3 for 4 with a triple and double. Jay Brown blasted a triple and double and drove in two runs, and senior third baseman Matt Gurley was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

 

Joe Tremblay was the winning pitcher. He allowed seven hits and struck out five in sixth innings.
