WESTFIELD Ð The Westfield State baseball team kept its conference postseason tournament hopes alive by sweeping a doubleheader from Framingham State, 4-2 and 7-2, on April 28.
The Owls are 6-6 (14-18 overall) in the conference and play at Salem State on Saturday in their regular season finale. Framingham dropped to 9-17 and 3-9.
The Owls scored four runs in the first inning of both games and received solid pitching performances from junior Joe DelSoldato (West Stockbridge) and sophomore Joe Tremblay (Westhampton).
DelSoldato went the distance in the first game, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out five. The southpaw started the second game and pitched the first two innings, allowing a second-inning run. Tremblay earned the victory, allowing five hits and a walk while whiffing three over the final five frames.
In the opener, Westfield collected four of its six hits in the first inning. Justin Parr (North Attleboro) had a runscoring single and senior first baseman Brett Ford delivered a two-run double.
Westfield leadoff batter Troy Ferguson (Rochester) was 2 for 4. Ram leadoff batter Dave Delory doubled for one of FraminghamÕs three hits.
The Owls outhit the visitors, 10-7, in the nightcap. Jay Brown (East Windsor, CT) was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Ferguson was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Parr was 2 for 3 with three RBI and Ford pounded a two-run double in the fourth inning. Sophomore catcher Chris Hebert (South Hadley) was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
Senior Phil McGeown had two doubles for the Rams.
