Owls Finish 7-3; Advance To NEFC Championship Game

It was another highly successful season for the Owls, who won their third straight NEFC Bogan Division championship and advanced to the NEFC title game for the third straight season. Highlights of the season were a 21-19 victory at Worcester State and a thrilling 27-24 come-from-behind homecoming victory over Bridgewater State.

Westfield has compiled an impressive 25-7 record the past three seasons.

WSC Special Achievment Team Awards

Outstanding Contributor: Mike Hurteau; 12th Player Award: Mark Lewis; Lineman of the Year: Rob Bryne; Defensive Player of the Year: Jessie Holmes: Offensive Player of the Year: Matt Yvon.

Bryne Named All American; Yvon Plays In Aztec Bowl

Westfield State College senior offensive lineman Rob Byrne of Ludlow was selected to the 26th annual 2003 College Sports Information Directors Division III All-America football team.

Byrne was an honorable mention selection on the prestigious All-America team, receiving the fourth most votes at the offensive center position. He anchored the offensive line during the past three seasons when the Owls posted an aggregate record of 25-7, captured one NEFC championship, played in three NEFC championship games, and participated in the NCAA and ECAC Tournaments.

"Our team's success was able to get Rob recognition, but he mostly received this honor on his own merits," said head coach Steve Marino. "He is the best center I've ever coached at Westfield State. He will not be replaced."

Byrne was outstanding during his senior season despite a lengthy recovery from knee surgery following his junior campaign. The 5-11, 255 pounder was all-conference for the third straight year in the 14-team New England Football Conference, and a first-team selection on the following all-star squads: Football Gazette All-East Region, New England Football Writers Divisions II/III team, and ECAC Northeast Region.

Byrne is the first offensive lineman in Westfield State history to achieve All America status, and he is the fourth player in the past three years to earn All-America honors. Linebacker Josue Zamora (2001, 2002), running back Shawn Lyman (2001) and defensive end Tim Corr (2001) were selected to All-America teams.

The 26th annual sports information directors team, formerly sponsored by Hewlett Packard, was selected by a panel of 30 sports information directors, including Westfield State SID Mickey Curtis. The SIDs represent the four playoff regions in NCAA Division III.

Yvon Plays In Aztec Bowl

Westfield State College standout wide receiver Matt Yvon (East Longmeadow/Cathedral High School) was selected to play for the NCAA Division III senior all-star team that represented the United States against Mexico in the 2003 Aztec Bowl in Cancun, Mexico, on Dec. 13.

Yvon was the only player from the 14-team New England Football Conference who was chosen for the prestigious game. Also representing the New England region on the 42-player roster are tight end Brian Whisler of Coast Guard, linebacker Graham Goldwasser of Williams, and offensive lineman Jared Carillo of Trinity.

"It's nice to see Matt's name on the list," said Westfield State head coach Steve Marino. "This is a great honor for him and for Westfield State College. I truly believe he is one of the best players in the nation."

The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending game for Mexico's college football schedule, and many professional scouts attend the contest. Yvon holds the New England Division III career records for receptions (217) and receiving yards (3413). He holds school records for points scored in career (241), and catches in a game (13), season (73) and career (217). Also, he holds school records for most yards receiving in a game (257) and career (3413).

The 6-2, 210-pounder was a first-team all-conference selection the past three seasons when the Owls posted an aggregate record of 25-7, won three NEFC Bogan Division championships, and captured the 2001 NEFC crown. He was the only unanimous all-conference selection and an All New England Divisions 2/3 first-team selection in 2003. In addition, Yvon was a second-team ECAC All New England pick in 2001 and made the Football GazetteÕs All East Region team in 2002.

This past season the future WSC Hall of Famer also returned punts and kickoffs and handled the placekicking duties.

Football Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Steve Marino

Steve Marino, in his 16th year at Westfield State, has established the Owls as a competitive club in the New England Division 3 football ranks.

Marino is the winningest coach at Westfield State with a 15-year record of 78-69-1, including a 30-11 record the past four years. In 2003 Westfield State advanced to the New England Football Conference championship for the third straight season, and in 2002 participated in its first ECAC Tournament.

Marino guided the 2001 squad to its first perfect regular season, a 10-0 record. The Owls won their first New England Football Conference championship and qualified for their first NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Western Connecticut State, 8-7, in a first-round game.

Marino's coaching during the special 2001 season did not go unnoticed as he was selected the American Football Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year; the New England Division II/III Coach of the Year by the New England writers, and the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Division II/III Coach of the Year. He has been the New England Football Conference Coach of the Year twice. Last season he was a unanimous pick by the coaches in the the 13-team conference. He also was NEFC Coach of the Year in 1992 when the Owls were 6-3.

In the spring of 1990, Marino was named head coach at Westfield State, where he graduated from in 1971.

"I have a lot of fond memories of my time spent at Westfield State," he said. "The college gave me a lot and I feel I owe it something in return."

Marino is the fourth head coach in the Westfield State football program's 22-year history, and he has provided the stability that was lacking in the program's first decade, when there were three head coaches during an eight-year span.

"I'm really committed to building a winning and competitive program here," said Marino. "Westfield State has so much to offer to Western Mass."

Marino received his B.A. degree in 1971 and his master's degree in 1978 from Westfield State. He taught English at Ludlow High School for 29 years, then moved into an administrative post (dean of students) four years ago. The 1967 graduate of Springfield Classical High School coached football at Ludlow High School for 16 years, including an eight-year stint as the head coach from 1979-86. He served as defensive coordinator at Western New England College in 1987 before returning to Ludlow as an assistant in 1988.

"Our goals are to win games and to play good, tough football," Marino said. "All of the teams I've been associated with have done that."

At the top of Marino's list of priorities for a successful football program is to attract quality student-athletes to Westfield State College.

"Our goal is to recruit 25 to 30 good kids annually and build on that," he said. "Each year we want to have about 15 four-year players in our program, which will provide us with the stability we need."

Marino's wife, Betsy, also is a 1971 graduate of Westfield State College. They reside in Ludlow and have two sons and one daughter: Don, a 1995 graduate of Westfield State; Steve, a 1999 Westfield State graduate, and Katie, a 2000 graduate of Bridgewater State College.

Assistant Coach Tim Brillo

Offensive Coordinator/Receivers

Seventh-year coach Tim Brillo graduated from Westfield State in 1992 with a movement science degree, and played four years of varsity football as a reserve quarterback.

Brillo has been a physical education teacher at Ludlow High School since 1993, and has been the department chair for the past two years. Also, he has acquired a vast amount of coaching experience at Ludlow.

He was an assistant football coach/offensive coordinator and an assistant boys' basketball coach from 1993-97, and an assistant boys' track and field coach in 1996. He was named the head varsity girls' basketball coach at Ludlow in 1997 and still holds the position.

During his undergraduate years at Westfield State, Brillo was heavily involved with the intramurals sports program and served as the Intramural Board President.

Assistant Coach Sean O'Brien

Defensive Secondary

Ninth-year assistant coach Sean O'Brien oversaw the secondary unit that spearheaded the Owls' pass defense whic was ranked second nationally in 2001 and 2002.

O'Brien has a wealth of coaching experience. His coaching stops include Frontier Regional High School in 1996; Fitchburg State College from 1993-95; Athol High School from 1991-92; Oberlin College in Ohio in 1990; and Nichols College from 1986-90.

O'Brien was the defensive coordinator at both Fitchburg State and Athol High School. He was the defensive line coach at Oberlin and the secondary coach and head scout at Nichols.

The Orange, Mass., native also has a vast amount of experience coaching track and field and serves as the head men's coach in the sport at Westfield State.

Assistant Coach Pete Kowalski

Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers

Beginning his 10th season as a member of the Westfield State coaching staff, Pete Kowalski was the architect of the Owls' stellar defense that led the nation in total defense in 2001 and 2002.

In addition to his title as defensive coordinator with an emphasis on linebackers, Kowalski was promoted to assistant head coach two years ago.

Prior to Westfield, he coached for 13 years at Bulkeley High School in Hartford, Conn., and was the defensive coordinator for the six seasons. Bulkeley was a state finalist in 1991 and had one of the top defenses in the state, allowing 5.4 points per game. In 1992 the Hartford school was ranked second in the state.

Kowalski has a wealth of coaching experience. He has served as a track and field coach at Bulkeley since 1985, including the past seven years as head coach. Kowalski graduated from West Springfield High School in 1972 and participated in football, basketball and track and field. He played one year of both football and lacrosse at UMass Amherst and graduated in 1977 with a health and physical education degree. Kowalski earned a master's degree in special education from American International College in 1980.

Kowalski has taught health and physical education in the Hartford Public Schools since 1980.
