The Westfield State field hockey tean made a dramatic reversal in 2004. After posting a 3-13 record in 2003, the Owls finished 11-6 in 2004 and claimed a share of the Mass. State Conference championship.
Westfield was vying to break the school record for victories in a season (12) but it suffered a pair of tough 2-1 losses in its final two games
“My coaching style hasn’t changed; the reason we were successful is because of the players,” said sixth-year head coach Heather Cabral, who was named the MASCAC Coach of the Year.
Winners of eight of their first nine games, the Owls were led by a pair of talented underclassmen. Sophomore midfielder Kate Anderson was named MASCAC co-Player of the Year. She finished with seven goals and nine assists, two shy of the school record.
Sophomore standout Shanna Litterst led Westfield in scoring in her first season of collegiate field hockey with 31 points (13 goals, 5 assists). The former Falmouth High School flash was named the Rookie of the Year in both the MASCAC and Little East Conference.
Another talented first-year player was freshman Megan Wolski, who ranked third in scoring with 16 points (eight goals). Versatile senior Laura Scott (4 goals, 6 assists) was a second team all-conference selection.
Junior midfielder Ashley Brogan joined Litterst and Anderson on the MASCAC all-conference first team. Scott and sophomore back Missy Alcorn were second team selections.
Senior goalie Kendra Newell was a second team all-conference pick in the 11-team Little East Conference.
