WESTFIELD – Senior Emily Downs (Sussx, NJ) scored two goals to lead Smith College to a 3-1 victory over Westfield State in the field hockey season opener for both teams.

Emily Heller and Downs scored in a five=minute span midway thru the first half to stake Smith to a 2-0 lead.

Westfield State made it 2-1 with 26:19 left in the game when sophomore Megan Wolski scored off a penalty corner.

Downs added an insurance goal with 13:57 remaining.
