WESTFIELD
Ð Senior running back Brenden Kavey (Pittsfield) rushed for 163 yards on 25
carries and senior wide receiver Mark Hull (North Attleboro) caught two touchdown
passes to lead Bridgewater State to a 32-7 New England Football Conference
victory over Westfield State.
Bridgewater
improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the NEFC Bogan Division. Westfield fell to
3-3 and 1-3 in dropping its homecoming game.
The
Bears also were backed by a solid defense that held the Owls to 151 yards in
total offense, including 24 net rushing yards. Bridgewater also intercepted two
passes and recovered three Westfield fumbles.
Bridgewater
opened the scoring with 12:02 remaining in the second quarter on an 11-yard
pass from senior quarterback Adam Camobreco (Duxbury) to Hull. The point after
attempt was blocked by WestfieldÕs Ryan Riley.
The
Owls took a 7-6 lead on the next possession on a 28-yard pass from senior
quarterback Mark Lorenzano (Quincy) to senior receiver B.J. Holleran (Quincy).
Bridgewater
scored a defensive touchdown with 5:29 left in the first half. Sophomore end
Robert Morrissey (Gloutcester) forced a fumble on a quarterback sack and senior
end Sal Longo (East Bridgewater) picked off the loose ball in midair and
returned it six yards for a score. Kavey ran for the two-point conversion.
The
Bears led 16-7 at halftime as they recorded a safety when WestfieldÕs center
snap on a punt attempt sailed out of the end zone.
Westfield
fumbled the second half kickoff and Bridgewater scored four plays later on an
8-yard TD run by Camobreco. Bridgewater completed its scoring in the fourth
quarter on a 36-yard TD reception by Hull and a safety on a blocked punt.
The
potent Bridgewater offense only passed for 110 yards on 8 of 22 attempts, but
rushed for 255 yards on 51 carries. Westfield State quarterbacks attempted 37
passes with 14 completions.
Morrissey
led the BearsÕ balanced defense with seven tackles, including three sacks, and
two forced fumbles.
Senior
linebacker Jim Fennelly (Wilmington) again played well for Westfield with 13
tackles, including 10 solos. Senior tackle Casey Lawrence (Ayer) had 6 tackles,
a sack, and a fumble recovery.
