Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College Lancer football team
defeated the visiting Owls of Westfield State College for the
first time
since the 2000 season by the final score of, 47-7, Friday night
under
the lights of Coughlin Field on the campus of Worcester State
College.
The win improves Worcester State to, 3-2, on the season and, 1-0,
in New
England Football Conference Bogan Division play, while Westfield
State
falls to 2-2 and 0-2 in the Bogan Division.
Worcester State led, 10-0, after the first quarter as the Lancers
opened
the scoring when junior quarterback Kyle Beatrice (Swampscott, MA)
found
senior wide receiver Jeremy Gaucher (Burrillville, RI) on a
41-yard
scoring strike midway through the first quarter. Senior place kicker
Tom Gabriel (Wareham, MA) followed that score late in the quarter
with a
27-yard field goal.
Early in the second quarter, junior running back Steve Kasprzak
(Tewksbury, MA) scored on a 1-yard plunge into the end zone. Late in
the second half, Beatrice and Gaucher hooked up again on a 23-yard
touchdown pass to give the Lancers a, 24-0, halftime advantage.
Four minutes into the second half the Lancers added to their lead
when
senior defensive back Jason Crabb (Andover, MA) forced a fumble at
the
50-yard line and defensive tackle Paul Ivanoski (S. Easton, MA)
picked
up the loose ball and sprinted 50 yards for the touchdown to
extend the
Lancers lead to 30-0.
Gabriel added his second field goal of the game
from 39 yards out to push the lead to, 33-0, and Izzy Ayala
(Southbridge, MA) scored on a 6-yard run to close out the third
quarter
with the Lancers leading 40-0.
Westfield State got on the board two minutes into the fourth
quarter
when Craig Skribiski (Whately, MA) forced a Lancer fumble and
sophomore
defensive back Ricky Angus (Foxboro, MA) grabbed the loose ball
and
returned it for a 30-yard touchdown. With eight minutes remaining in
the game, junior running back Billy Shea (Walpole, MA) scored on a
14-yard touchdown run to give the Lancers the, 47-7, win.
The Lancer defense held the Owls to zero first downs in the first
half
and to 62 total yards on the game, while Worcester State totaled
335
yards of total offense.
Beatrice finished the game 8 for 19 with 154
passing yards and Gaucher had 4 catches for 111 yards and 2
touchdowns.
Worcester State will travel to Framingham State next Saturday,
while the Owls will visit Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
