Westfield State 82 Š Bridgewater State 61
WESTFIELD - Junior forward Mike Jurkowski (Belchertown) had career highs of 33 points and 16 rebounds, and senior forward Vaso Jaukovic (Serbia/Montenegro) posted a triple-double (11 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) to power Westfield State to an 82-61 victory over Bridgewater State on Feb. 1.
The Owls won their third straight game to improve to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the Mass. State Conference. Bridgewater is 9-8 and 4-3.
Jurkowski, who scored 30 points last Thursday vs. Framingham, was nearly unstoppable as moved well without the ball and shot with deadly accuracy in and around the key. The smooth 6-4 forward was 16-for-23 from the field and also contributed three assists and four steals to the winning cause. Jurkowski only struggled from the line where he made just 1 of 5 free throws.
Westfield again shot well, making 57 percent of its field goal attempts, including 61 percent (17 of 28) in the second half. The Owls led 38-28 at halftime and boosted the lead to 56-37 with 12:26 remaining.
Westfield freshman guard Tony Collier (Colchester, VT) also had an outstanding game with 15 points and nine rebounds. Collier got the starting nod in place of sophomore guard Gavin Illangakoon, who was sidelined with a broken nose.
Bridgewater struggled from the field, shooting just 29 percent. Westfield dominated the boards, outrebounding the Bears, 49-27.
Junior guard Cliff Furtado (Fall River) and senior forward Chris Hayes (Weymouth) led Bridgewater with 14 points apiece. Senior point guard Brian Adamczyk (Chicopee) had 10 points and seven assists.
