Game One: Westfield State 7 Ð Bridgewater State 4

 

Game Two: Bridgewater State 3 Ð Westfield State 2

 

WESTFIELD Ð Westfield State and Bridgewater State split a conference softball doubleheader April 18. The Owls won the opener, 7-4, while Bridgewater won the nightcap, 3-2.

 

Westfield is now 9-15 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Bridgewater is 12-13 and 5-3.

 

The Owls scored twice in the first, third and fourth innings, and led 7-2 after six innings. Westfield outhit the Bears, 9-7, with senior third baseman Casey Greggo (Wappinger Falls, NY) delivering the big blows. Greggo was 2 for 3 with a triple, double and three RBI.

 

Senior catcher Liz Oliveira (Fall River) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and freshman Kate Silva (Wilbraham/Minnechaug) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Winning pitcher Leah Peterson (Lakeville/Apponequet) aided her own cause with a triple and two runs scored.

 

Bridgewater senior center fielder Natalie Barbanti (Saugus) was 4 for 4 with two runs scored.

 

Peterson struck out eight and walked four in going in the distance; she allowed one earned run.

 

Peterson also went the distance in the second game and allowed three unearned runs, all in the decisive third inning. She gave up five hits and four walks and whiffed six.

 

Bridgewater leadoff batter Diane Rice (Wareham) was 2 for 2 and Nicole Hebert (Taunton) was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Freshman Katie Balboni (Townsend) tripled.

 

Oliveira had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to drive in both Westfield runs. Peterson was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
