Westfield State 92 Ð Albertus Magnus 51

 

 

WESTFIELD Ð Junior forward James Ogbunize (Springfield/Sci-Tech) scored a career-high 18 points a grabbed a team-high six rebounds to lead Westfield State to a 92-51 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Dec. 9.

 

The Owls (2-5) jumped out to an early 13-3 lead over winless Albertus Magnus (0-5) and never looked back. Westfield led 41-22 at halftime and expanded its lead by shooting a sizzling 65 percent in the second half.

 

Westfield sophomore guard Ricky Ogboin (Boston/Brighton) scored 15 points and freshman guard Andy Deffer (Beverly) came off the bench to score 13 points in the final 10 minutes. Deffer was 5-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

 

Junior point guard Bayete Gordon (Amherst) directed WestfieldÕs high scoring attack with 10 assists in 22 minutes of action. Freshman guard Steven Martins (Westfield/Westfield Voke) started for the Owls and recorded seven points Ð all in the first half Ð four rebounds and three steals.

 

Senior guard Tim Russell (Burlington, Conn.) led Albertus Magnus with 16 points; he entered the contest averaging 30 points per game. Sophomore center Vaughn Butler had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the undermanned Falcons, who only fielded eight players.
